Independence day was a proud day and not just another holiday !!

the only channel loved was Doordarshan..

When Street Hawk and Night Rider were the only two Hollywood serials shown late night( 10:30 was a l...ate night in 90's)..

Mile sur mera tumhara was song for national integrity( not a celebs starred spoiled curry) and all person in them were real achievers !!!

When the summer vacation was meant to spend time with family members and visiting relatives and watch CHUTTI CHUTTI , instead of going on summer camp..

When Power Failure was a success symbol for government that we are progressing.. :P

When Soccer and cricket were only outdoor games.. and XBOX was still an alien to us..

When Jadeja was the Live-wire of Indian Cricket Team and Sachin was on road to break all records..

When Indian hockey team was still a prestigious place to be..

When Tehqiqat and Vyomkesh Bakshi were the only thriller serials we had..

When LOVE was too simple to be sophisticated.. and When LOVE meant RAJ and SIMRAN..DDLJ and not KANK :P he he...

When the only shoes for sports was ACTION from BATA and adidas and Nike were a dream..

When NOTEBOOK meant the place where we could scribble our handwriting and get red mark all over it..

When LIFE was too COOL to be BUSY and not too BUSY to be COOL !!!!!!!!!!!!

We grew up in India when..

1. You feel visiting neighbor's house to watch a match (esp big matches) is a great experience
2. Gape at Hindi versions of American shows
3. Thought anyone who had "cable channel" was ultra rich
4.don't understand why this "generation" is fa...scinated by animes
5. think playing with one Barbie doll is super duper cool (now no one can think of having less than 15 :P)
6. can 'hang out' with your friends on the local playground
7. don't think 2 hours of load shedding is something impossible to survive through
8. know how to wear a saree in the 'Indian style' and don't just wrap it around you leaving half of your body exposed
9. think teachers are really wise and ask them questions to which you want answers (now kids simply google)
10. think Britannia is the ultimate biscuit making company.

We grew up in India when..

1) wen we went to school after HOLI holidays nd the amount of color still remaining on our hands nd face ws a ststus symbol to compare who hd played the best HOLI.

2) wen we waited eagerly for rainy day ( holiday announcement)

3) wen every saturday at 12 noon movies selected from baal film mahotsav were telecast

4) wen we watched shaktimaan on sunday(earlier saturday), thn captain vyom nd thn a half an hour disney show on which 3 stories (rather fairy tales) were shown wdout any breaks.

5) wen we always found a place to play chhupan chhupaai nd called it ICE PICE........later cumin to knw that it ws aactually I SPY nd thn proudly xplaining it to evry 1....thinking that no 1 else wud knw......

We grew up in India when..

when we used to dash home from school, throw our bags and run down to play...pakda pakdi, chhupa chupi, chor police, dog n the bone....

When the Deol brothers, suniel shetty, Jackie Shroff etc were still delivering hits... ;-)

When Madhuri's ...pristine beauty made many young hearts skip a beat

When we listened to Kumar Sanu and appreciated his voice! And people actually knew who Baba Sehgal was.

When Pizza Huts and Mac D's and KFCs were quite unheard of and Aam Pachak and chatar Patar and churan was relished :-)

When we religiously watched Captain Vyom, Chandrakanta, Mahabharat, Mowgli, Alice in Wonderland, Sea Hawks, I dream of Jeannie, Dennis the menace :-)

When DD had the balls to air the first english television serial..A Mouthful of Sky..(and Milind Soman was young and oh-so-handsome)

When most of the mothers weren't busy climbing the corporate ladder..and had always time for us :-)

Suno ji or aji sunte ho was how most moms addressed most dads....not by their names! :-)

When we never..NEVER EVER had to bother about money (which we rarely had in our pockets), rat races, recessions, economic downturns, inflation, rising gold prices, IT jobs, broken relationships..

The biggest and commonest time-pass amongst adolescent school going kids was to write FLAMES on a bit of paper and find out who was a "Friend",who "Loves" u etc etc

When every house had a land line phone that rang with its same old ring tone and mobiles ringing with filmy tunes were unheard of

When people bought smart little Phone/Address diaries and meticulously copied their contacts from old diaries to new ones..and only true friends survived the transition between old phone diary to new phone diary :-)

When telephones were meant for talking, letters were meant for messaging and cameras were meant for clicking photographs...a single rectangular device, doing all this...was unique and rare

When our relatives staying abroad visited us once a year or once in two years and the "foreign gifts" they brought were highly cherished and shown off....unlike today when all foreign products available on shelves in air conditioned departmental stores or available online on e-bay...

We weren't very connected to people...hardly any caller ID phones in the middle class Indian home..no internet...and even if there was internet then certainly no webcam...no mobile cameras, no 3G....so we looked forward with anticipation everytime the phone rang, or everytime the doorbell rang or the postman delivered a letter....we couldn't Block contacts/friends (like we do on chat lists today)..if we didn't like them..every call had to be received, every knock on the door answered and every letter read.

We addressed people as Bhaiya, didi, Uncle, aunty, Bhai saab, Behan ji, sir, madam or if not anything then with a beautiful "ji" at the end of their names...we weren't on first name terms with everyone and had a relation for every stranger too.

My wasn't spelled "mah", You wasn't "ya", The was never "da", Cool wasn't "kewl", Goodnight, Sweetdreams was not "GN SD" and neither was Take care "TC"...and Love wasn't "luv" and Life wasn't "lyf"....in the 90s!!

CID was the smartest thing on TV :P
we used to play chupan chupai till 9 at night and parents used to call us for dinner..then we used to reply mum 5 min me aata hun and those 5 minutes used to be 1 more hour :D
you watch DDLJ/HAHK/DTPH atleast once every 6-8 months, and you understood exactly what I just typed :P
Everythng was simple nd i was contented
When Bajaj Scooter was the common private mode of transportation.
watchin da best of da cartoons ( wen compared to todays crap)
I ws excited 2 get my first black and white Nokia mobile.
the life was colorful..
when Doordarshan was not an unheard of thing relegated to some nostalgic corner of the mind, it was very much a daily reality!!!
I couldn’t wait to start 4th standard so I could start writing with PENS instead of with pencils!
the first song that comes to your mind during anthakshari is "Mayani mayani mundere pe therre bol raha hai kaaga"! Till date you cant come up with any of the latest ones!
Dekh bhai dekh used to be the best comedy serial.
5 rupee note was enough 2 buy d world...d whole school hours we used 2 imagin wat we could get with dat huge allowance... :) :P
when my house was out of city n nw its in centre of city... most posche area... lol
we would beg are parents to let us stay awake on friday nights to watch chhoti si aasha!
When u had an exciting line up of shows on TV esp on Sunday's :)
Jungle book nd alice in wndrlnd were telecasted on dd every sunday
When I had to lie to my parents and bunk college classes to spend time with my boyfriend..... now my dear hubby.
wen thr was no orkut no facebook, still we were all in touch
when rita icecream orange bar used to be 50 paise!!!
When there were not so many news channels to make every thing breaking news.. :P
when coming to school in a School bus after 8th grade was the most ridiculous thing you did.
when thr was Y messenger & MIRC chatting site.
having a mobile was a dream come true

Whn evry friday we used to watch muvies on dd
TNT channel was the most adult friendly channel that kids used to sneak to watch...lolzz
when bikes was the craze and maruti evryone wanted to have.....
we went to school in auto rikshaws n horse carts..and people drove scooters and lunas.
When, ur teacher scold and parents supported teacher. Which made us generation different
when sunday mornings we use to get up early to watch t.v........
Rangoli and chitrahar were the only programs that would play new hindi songs ;)
When we used to wait for the summer vacations to visit our grand parents........
when we used to watch denis the menace and Gennie on star plus...
Ek chidiya.. Anek Chidiya was my favourite adv.
When I was a fan of Banegi Apni Baat !
tape recorders and VCR's were a source of entertainment.
Collecting tazzos and doing weird experiments were the only interesting hobbies! not to forget, my favourite movie was released in '96-Space Jam!! looney toons too :^)
when we used to read chacha chaudhary and eat satmola and kurkure until we got sick from eating so much junk!
we watched raja rancho and shriman shrimati on dd metro...
all those amazing shows on DD - Jungle Book, Mahabharat, Blossom, Dekj Bhai Dekh, Johnny Sokko and His Flying Robot, Street Hawk... So many!
Have a bicycle was like having had conquered the whole world.. :-)..... Waiting for Sunday Morning to watch RANGOLI to start the day with...
pepsi was the coolest drink to hang out with..........people flaunted thier pepsi cans...... pepsi set the trend of soft drinks
we were hell freak of tazos n trump cards..
When playing video games was a big craze.. super mario, spartan, contra, etc etc...
when everyone wanted to have a Maruti 800 or esteem ..
When Disney show at 5 in evening was y i came home from school :D
when akshay kumar beat the hell outta nakli undertaker in international khiladi!

when girl friends never carried their own mobiles ...u had to ring the landline couple of times untill finally the girl picks up :)
when We used to watch movies on VCPs and VCRs...exchange comics from friends or bought it on rent...collect stickers of different super heroes and comic characters..!! Amazing it was.... :)
you actually spent time catching up with friends .....instead of being stuck to FB, Twitter and Skype all the time or worse your mobile phone...
when Rasna was the most famous refershing drink ,,, lolz when Computer was not in its existence atleast to the children... when sony entertainment showed all the hindi dubbed serials liek different stroke dennis the menace, duck tales and yes how can I forget the Disney Hour on star plus and yeah zee horror show! lol

when d telephone operator used 2 tell us dat r relatives have called, n dn v used 2 go n stand in d queue 4 dr call 2 come...this system was followed in d railway families vr there used 2 b nly 1 railway phone in d whole colony, n talking trhu it was free...r relatives had 2 connect d phone vd d railway telecom operator...
when lukka chuppi, pakda pakdi were r fav games, n as gals...ghar ghar...hehe...now ghar ghar is old fashioned game n hardly gals play...
when watching WWF(RAW) was ultimate fun..
when life was meaningful

When Surabhi was the only knowledge-based show with amazing anchors Renuka and Siddharth !!
playing real cricket was actually quite enjoyable than this virtual video games...!!
Every day had a special programmes on Tv , Chitrahaar on Wednesday, Thursday Mungerilal ke hasin sapne, Friday Yeh jo hai Zindagi , Sunday Mr and Mrs , Sunday 8 .oclock movie, Friday the world this week by prannoy roy ,i loved the monte carlo ad , which had the song Nothings gonna change my love ,Monday Nukkad, Yes of course Tuesday Johny sokko and his giant robot
when there were no 24 hr channels, and we used to just stare at the Zee TV logo for hours and hours before it would start telecasting programmes by 7 pm
bata was the only shoe brand
when 4MB RAM was the fastest and 320MB hard disk was more than enough
we used to stay awake late night seeing da horror shows nd then hav sleepless nights thinkin abt it.......nd there were lods of shows for us kids....there ws ninja turtles,small wnder,duck tales,alladin,shaktimaan gawd there were lods of them....nd there ws ENID BLYTON nd harry potter
ppl remembered each others telephone no.s
Post card was the only way to participate in a contest ..
When indian cricket players were playing for country, not for money.

HE-MAN,Mowgli and Uncle Scrooge wer the Tele stars.....when WWF meant...World Wrestling Federation....and pepsi meant sweetened nd flavoured ice in a cylindrical l pack....
When WWF posters/postcards and Gaming cards were more valued than gold
wen SACHIN WAS only hope for indian cricket team...wen kids like to read comics...wen we used to hide gift with ourbsiblings..wen we used to take permission to go to the loo...wen we used to get scared from horror show...wen shaktiman was only india super hero...
Wen i use to think undertaker had more than seven lives...n he use to resurrect from death in WWE!!
u used music cassettes...n not media players for listening to ur favr8 songs!!!!!!!!
when we used to make paper boats in the rain nd make them sail in places whr water clogged...
when we used to give 2 toffees to all r classs on birthday.. nd den there used to be a quarell about choosing a frnd to distribute sweets the the t...eachers in school..
when birthday treats nd parties meant staying at home inviting frnds nd have chola bhature or chowmein made by mom...
when apple and blackberry were just fruits and nothing else.......!!!
when we used to play outside in the evening with neighbours games like hide and seek, elastic, tip-tip tap and list goes....on sunday evening start perparing for school while watching the movie...finish dinner early for chitrahaar...and had lots of friends to play with
u used to watch 26 january parade on tv every year religiously!

superhit muqabila was the only countdown show to keep us updated with the latest bollywood songs..

Worst fears of our childhood days.

As a Kid, I was scared of Onida devil, who supposedly used to pull people into the television if they misbehave(like not eating their food on time). I also believed, that the people who suffer such fate remain to be sculptures on a haunted mountain.

Luckily it wasn't too late for me to realize everything was fake. By the way, mountain I was referring to is Mount Rushmore. :P Now I know Iam not the only person scared of such silly stuff.
